Process Overview :

What is Plasma Cutting & How Does It Work?

Plasma cutting is a process where electrically conductive metals are cut using a jet of hot plasma — ionised gas heated to over 20,000°C — directed through a focused nozzle onto the material.

Unlike mechanical cutting or oxy-fuel cutting, plasma cutting is faster, cleaner, and works on a wide range of metals including mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium, copper, and brass.

APS Rhino Cut machines use advanced IGBT inverter technology for stable arc control, energy efficiency, and clean cut edges with minimal slag. For automated large-scale cutting, pair with our CNC Plasma Gantry Cutting Machine

  • Compressed air supplied

Air is pushed through the plasma torch at high pressure to form the cutting gas stream.

  • Arc ionises the gas

High-frequency arc ionises the air into plasma — a superheated electrically conductive gas jet.

  • Plasma melts the metal

The plasma jet, reaching 20,000°C, instantly melts the metal at the cutting point with precision.

  • Molten metal blown away

High-velocity gas flow blows away molten material, leaving a clean, narrow kerf cut.

Machine Capabilities : Key Features of APS Rhino Cut Plasma Machines

  • IGBT Inverter Technology

Energy-efficient IGBT-based inverter ensures stable arc, lower power consumption, and consistent cutting performance.

  • Clean Cut with Minimal Slag

Focused plasma jet delivers narrow kerf, smooth cut edges, and minimal post-cut cleanup across all metals.

  • Stable Arc Control

Precise arc regulation ensures uniform cutting depth and edge quality across mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminium.

  • OC / OT / UV / OV Protection

Built-in over-current, over-temperature, under/over voltage protection for long machine life and safe operation.

  • Air Cooled — Low Maintenance

Air-cooled design requires minimal maintenance, reducing downtime and operational costs in production environments

  • CNC Compatible

Can be paired with APS CNC Gantry Cutting systems for automated, large-volume precision cutting operations.

Applications of Plasma Cutting Machines :

  • Metal Fabrication Workshops
Back-gouging hull welds, removing defective joints, and preparation for repair welding on vessels.
  • Automotive Manufacturing
Precision panel and component cutting with clean edges and tight tolerances for vehicle parts.
  • Shipbuilding & Railways
Heavy plate cutting for ship hull sections, rail components, and large structural assemblies.
  • Construction & Infrastructure
Site-use plasma cutting for structural steel, beams, columns, and on-site fabrication work.
  • Industrial Maintenance
Quick metal cutting for repair, replacement parts, and maintenance shutdowns in plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a plasma cutting machine used for?

A plasma cutting machine is used to cut conductive metals such as mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum using a high-temperature plasma arc.

  • What thickness can a plasma cutter cut?

Cutting thickness depends on the machine capacity. Industrial plasma cutters can cut thin sheets to heavy metal plates efficiently.

  • What is the difference between CNC plasma and air plasma cutter?

CNC plasma cutting machines are automated systems for large-scale precision cutting, while air plasma cutters are portable and suitable for manual operations.

  • How much does a plasma cutting machine cost in India?

The cost varies depending on model, capacity, and features. Contact APS Welding for the latest price and quotation.
